Case Study

In order to identify and investigate the nature of impacts of proposed tipping of mineral spoil upon the ecological interests of a site in Yorkshire, a desk-based information search combined with the results of field surveys was required for submission as an Ecology Chapter within an Environmental Impact Assessment.

A search of available environmental information held by various organisations, and consultations with interested parties was undertaken.  An evaluation of the nature conservation value of the area likely to be affected by the proposed tipping was made in terms of its current nature conservation interest, with particular regard to Protected Species and National and Local Biodiversity Action Plan priority habitats and species.

An assessment of the relative significance (i.e. at local, regional, national or international level) of identified sites (or features) of ecological interest was made.  Each site or feature was classified according to its ‘sensitivity’.  A brief description of each type of impact likely to occur i) during the period of tipping and ii) during the restoration phase was provided, together with likely magnitudes.

Measures to ensure the protection of features of special nature conservation and environmental interest were recommended.

Opportunities for habitat creation and enhancement were identified and an indicative habitat restoration scheme was prepared.
